Chipmunks 2

REELGUY'S DVD REVIEW: "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" a decent follow-up for the kids

Expecting to watch a film that would only hold the attention of a little one, I popped in the second "Alvin and the Chipmunks" movie. To my surprise this second adventure in the revamped series, based upon the several decades old cartoon chipmunks, is mildly amusing for even grown-ups. Certainly, "Chipmunks 2" is firmly in kid's territory with the computer-animated chipmunks entering high school and the associated high jinks that come from trying to fit in. The use of contemporary humor and music allows an instant connection to the story, but it is also a lingering issue that may give "The Squeakquel" a limited shelf life in children’s attentions.

The introduction of the Chipettes--a girl music group of chipmunks--leads to both rivalry and budding affections with the boys. But the severe lack of the Chipmunk's guardian, Dave (Jason Lee: TV's "My Name is Earl"), in the picture and the substitution with lesser-known actors gives "The Squeakquel" a direct-to-DVD feel that it never quit shakes. Most children are unlikely to notice and will instead enjoy the continuing antics of the humorous animals in this new setting. Music fans will have plenty of opportunities to hear some of their favorite songs given the Chipmunk treatment. The sequel is fast-paced, easy to follow and willing to pack a couple of morals into the story, including being true to both yourself and your family. It's definitely worth a rental if you enjoyed the original film and a decent family movie night pick.

Rated PG for some mild rude humor.
