A buddy flick gone horribly wrong, Adam Sandler and Kevin James should never work together again. Blatantly offensive to most human beings, as Sandler insults obese people, homosexuals, Asians, and the recently deceased - while embarrassingly finding no humor, “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” is dead on arrival.
Sandler and James play firefighters in New York, who are friends and colleagues. When James let’s his pension benefits slip, because he doesn’t name a new beneficiary on his policy after his wife dies, he must find a way around the bureaucratic mess. The simple - yet one note - solution is to form a domestic partnership with his swinging single pal, Sandler. Laughs are then suppose to ensue - but they don‘t.
Sandler’s production company may have gone to the well one too many times, as it has all the mainstays of most of his earlier films, except for the humor. The flimsy premise does not lead to a heartwarming or enjoyable story. Instead “Chuck & Larry” vacillates between derogatory put-downs and a parade of stereotypical and unbelievable characters, none of which are interesting. Sadly, Jessical Biel, Dan Aykroyd, and other well-known actors and comedians are dragged along for a painful ride.
PG-13 for crude sexual content throughout, nudity, language, and drug references.
