Back Up Plan

REELGUY’S FILM BRIEF: "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" wacky and wonderful comic book picture

Synopsis: Based on a little known comic series and adapted for the screen by British comedy director Edgar Wright, the film follows seemingly inconsequential Scott as he attempts to defeat the seven evil ex-boyfriends of new flame, Ramona.

Opening thoughts: Though audiences have seen Michael Cera play this part before in "Superbad," etc. he is still able to milk laughs and sympathy from viewers. The real star of the picture, however, is the elaborate, surreal action pieces that are heavily influenced by video games.

Pros:- Michael Cera doing what he’s good at - The action set pieces are fun and furious, for those who like a little wackiness - Wright gives the picture a very distinctive “look” that sets it apart - Some very funny dialogue keeps the gaps between fights entertaining - An entrancing turn by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as emo girl, Ramona - A scene-stealing supporting role by an adult Kieran Culken as Scott’s gay roommate

Cons:- Michael Cera playing the same character again - Not for those who don’t understand video game culture or goofy fight scenes - Maybe a few too many boyfriends to fight makes the story feel a bit long

Final word: A fun flick for those who are young or young-at-heart. Not for everyone but distinctive and impressive enough to be a cult hit in the making.

Audience: Freaks, geeks, and those who admire their culture

Rated PG-13 for stylized violence, sexual content, language and drug references.
