Back Up Plan

REELGUY’S DVD BRIEF: "Survival of the Dead" is a horrifingly awful movie

Synopsis: Zombie movie director George Romero may have taken one too many trips to the well with this story of feuding families on an island after the zombie outbreak.

Opening thoughts: Appropriately straight-to-DVD fare that is below Romero’s skills as a writer and a director.

Pros:- Romero can still startle occasionally with his shambling undead hordes

Cons:- The story of two warring families is uninspired and poorly developed - A cast of nobodies give very uneven performances - An off-shoot of Romero’s superior "Diary of the Dead," but following unimportant and unsympathetic characters - The film tries unsuccessfully to make light of the zombie outbreak, see "Shaun of the Dead" instead - Not enough scares or tension for a watchable horror movie

Final word: "Survival of the Dead" is terrible and almost unwatchable. Romero needs to take some time before directing his next project.

Audience: Not even Romero fans will want to see this.

Rated R for strong zombie violence/gore, language and brief sexuality.
